Top 5 Tips To Become A Better Freestyle Dancer

What’s cracking people
Remember in one of my previous posts when i talked about becoming a better hip hop dancer? One of the tips was to practice freestyling. I think this is the most important element in my opinion. I love to freestyle. It just makes me feel so good. Freestyling is like a dancer’s personal fingerprint because freestyle dance displays your own unique style of dancing. At least for the real freestylers out there. Some people just take what they learn from other people’s hip hop dance class and put it together to make up their freestyle. To me that is not what freestyle dancing is. Freestyle dance no matter what your style, is being able to turn on the music and just let go of what you learned in class or what you saw on tv, and just letting your inner self shine. How do you think different styles of dance where created? They were created by someone turning on a certain kind of music and just letting out what they felt on the inside and Voila! Ballet was created! Hip hop was created, salsa was created etc….. oh yea and the Soldier boy LOL. SO yes being able to freestyle is important to the evolution of dance. I know you’re saying Freestyle dancing is not easy. Well that’s what I’m here for, to help you!
Here Are The Top 5 Ways To Become A Better Freestyle Dancer
1. Don’t Care What You Look Like-
When it come to freestyling you can’t be insecure about yourself and your moves. It also doesn’t matter what you do– its how you do it! Practice on your own until you gain more confidence to freestyle in front of other people.
2. Listen-
Pay attention to the music. Remember, it’s you and the music so really focus on the music. Let the music lead you. Close your eyes and search for each element that makes up the track and play around with the different sounds.
3. Know No Boundaries-
There are no rules to freestyle. You can do any moves you want. You can add in ballet, hip hop, jazz or whatever you’re feeling at that moment. You can do whatever you want unless you are in a freestyle competition then some rules may apply. Be expressive. Smile but don’t do the stank face it is not pleasant lol. You want people to enjoy watching you you don’t want them to be wondering if somebody farted in here lol. Just have fun and the people watching you will too!
4. Take Your Time-
Please Please take you time. You don’t want to give it all you got when you first start. You want to build up to your best moves. If you don’t take your time you won’t last very long. Don’t force the moves. Take your time and let them come to you.
5. Be In The Moment-
Try not to think so much freestyling is a spontanious thing. Don’t think about what you’re going to do next or what you did the last time. Freestyle is supposed to be different every time. Let it flow off the top of your head.
Here is my favorite video of myself fresstlying. I really was in the zone by the end. The music took me to some places that i never been before. Notice that I added different styles into my freestyle but my main style is Hip hop but you can see some ballet modern etc…. Also notice how I play with the music and the words at different time. Then look at my face I’m really expressing the music not only through my body but my face as well. You just have to let go but it takes practice! practice! practice!

Hi Chopper,
Thank you for your posts on dance.net.. It is amazing I actually even checked my hotmail to see
that cuz I really only use gmail these days..
I hadn’t received a reply or posted on dance.net for
like two years or so…
Around that time, I just gave up trying to explain what freestyle was about and just focus on actually
dancing completely…I guess leading by example is
better than all the explanations you could ever write.
At the moment, I am soley focused on releasing all
the supressed emotion inside me, as I now know that our physiology is based upon our truth…cuz I can’t take my skill any further without expanding these inner boundaries which are slowly, but surely
perfecting my body….(I was a very supressed individual as I only now realise.) Posture, flexbility, agility, strength, power etc only come as a gift when you learn to humble yourself and let go of all resentment, negativity, pride, trauma etc… Basically for me, its no longer about dance, but about spiritual expression……and I will tell you…dance is becoming insane for me….
I know we will meet cuz I have instant respect for you and that rarely happens…I watched your clip..I can see you.
I am blessed to receive your friendship..
Damon..
PS. I can’t wait to dance with you.

WOW! Thats crazy that you just decide to check you other email account.
Well, thats the way life works.
I think it is great what you learned about yourself through dance. The things that you have discovered take some people a life time to find. Its funny i could never actually put into words what freestyle dance did for me spiritually.
You have been able to capture the feeling with words and that is amazing.
I thank you for that and if you have anymore wisdom to drop please feel free.
I’m trying to get the word out about my blog and i would like for us to stay connected
I think dancer and also non dancer would really benefit from both of our wisdom. Once again Thank you.

Chopper! Just wanna say thank you for the work that you been doing. I know you prolly hear that alot, but how else can I say it right? You’re a great inspiration. Great chory. Great teaching. Thank you!
Justa quick question man. I’m 8 months into dancing (even though time is irrelevant in our art). With my freestyling, I’m feeling a kind of a “mental block” because I been told to watch my lines and make it look clean and sharp. But when I’m thinking about things like line and technique and stuff it just messes with my head and I can’t get in the zone! I know there’s not really a right and wrong way to freestyle, but could you help me out? It’s been buggin alot lately.
