So you want to take a hip hop class. That is great cause I’m an expert when it comes to Hip Hop dance. So who better to ask than an expert. I have been doing hip hop dance since I can remember. I fell in love with hip hop when I first heard Heavy D and the Boyz “More Bounce
Man that joint was the bomb! And THE BOYZ dancing was off the chain. Well if you don’t know bout that don’t worry bout it, that was before your time. But whatever time you got introduced to hip hop dance it’s all good cause hip hop dance is more alive now than its ever been. It has crossed cultural boundaries and brings us all together to enjoy this thing called dance.
I know you want to take a hip hop class and maybe you don’t know where to go for the best Hip Hop dance class. Well before I tell my opinion on where to get the best hip hop training, you first need to know that there are a couple of different styles of hip hop dance. There is Breaking, popping, locking, house, krumping and new school hip hop(music video hip hop). The first 3 styles that I mentioned are the foundation of HIP HOP and you may call them old school hip hop or underground hip hop dance styles. I’ll touch more on each style a little later.
I’ll focus on today’s hip hop dance which is new school hip hop dance or you can call it commercial hip hop. it’s the hip hop dances that you see all on tv, music videos, commericals, movies etc… The best place to go for commercial hip hop dance is Hollywoood California. the reason that Hollywood is the best place is because just about everything that you see on TV is film in LA and so that’s where all the celebrity artists shoot their music videos and etc… so as a dancer it would be wise to be in LA so that you can dance for those artists, be in those commercials and tv shows. That being said, this is what makes Hollywood California the prime place to be to get into “the business”. Don’t get me wrong, Hollywood is not the only place to learn hip hop. New York is a great place to go and train, especially in old school styles. But New York doesn’t have as many job opportunities. Hollywood California is the place to be.
Now when you get to Hollywood or where ever you may be and you decide that you want to take a hip hop dance class there are a few things you should be looking out for in a good hip hop dance class.
So here they are…..
The Top 3 Things That Make Up a Great Hip Hop Dance Class.
1. Energy-
When you walk into the class you should be able to tell if it’s going to be a great class or not. As the class progresses, the energy should be through the roof. Almost like a party. It should be exciting and up beat. It should motivate you to keep dancing.
2. Good Music-
Of course the music should be off the chain. I think the music is the most important part cause hip hop music is what created hip hip dance. Whether music is current or old school, it should be up beat with a heavy bass line. You should be able to feel the music pounding in your chest and getting your body moving!
3. Good Communication-
The teacher should have excellent communication skills and be able to teach you the proper way to execute hip hop dance. They should be very energetic and have patience with their students. I will go into more detail later on what it takes to be a great hip hop dancer in my next post.
