What’s crackin?

You’d be surprised how many times during my career as a dance teacher and choreographer I get asked what to wear to hip hop class. The answer is always pretty much always the same – comfortable loose fitting clothing that allows you to move and feel good. That is the basis of hip hop attire. The second part to that answer is that there are clean cut answer. From the days of the Sugar Hill Gang to Kanye Wesy hip hop fashion is ever evolving. Hip hop creates trends that create style.

Here are some ideas to consider when dressing for any hip hop class.

  1. Will I be comfortable? - With the wide range of movements involved in Hip Hip dance you must be ready to take on any range of motion, especially in class. Be prepared.
  2. Do my shoes give me proper support and weight? – Hip Hop dance is a grounded dance style unlike ballet or jazz. A wide soled street shoe with a good weight will help to keep you on the ground and give mre control when executing moves.
  3. Do my clothes look good? – Hip Hop dancing is about more than execution, it’s a feeling. Looking the part in turn heps you feel the part and perform better. Image dancing to the latest hard hitting Timbaland beat in a leotard and jazz shoes. Its all about the show and incorporating all aspect of your self into a performance.
  4. Do you feel good? – The answer should always be YES!

Here are some hip hop looks through the decades. Some I’m sure we will never see again and some that are back in style today.
