Who Else Wants to Learn Some Hip Hop Dance Terminology

Y’all know I love teaching Hip Hop Dance to beginners.  Teaching hip hop to beginners is one of my true passions.  In my Beginning Hip Hop Dance Sessions for adults I’m really able just give my students a lot of knowledge and tips on Hip hop dance but Sometimes I get carried away and I start preachin about my experience of being a professinal dancer.  My students just look at me like I’m crazy cause I’m speaking in dance slang. They have know clue what I’m talking about.  They don’t understand a lot of the hip hop dance terminology.  I decided to put together a list of hip hop dance terms for you so that when you take my class, you’ll know what I’m saying…

OGRAPHY- SHORT FOR CHOREOGRAPHY-The art of creating and arranging dances

EIGHT-COUNT -A counting pattern representing the number of beats in two measures of music.

Popping-Contracting and releasing of muscles in your chest, arms, legs and shoulders to create a jerking motion to the beat.

Tutting - controlled arm and hand movements usually held in a right-angle position. The Robot dance is a form of tutting.

MARK - Dancing with low energy.

Grinding - is a type of close partner dance where two or more dancers rub their bodies (especially the genitalia) against each other in a sexually suggestive manner. It has gained popularity at high school and middle school dances across the Western world, where there have been cases of administrators attempting to ban it.[1]Dancing which consists mainly of grinding has also been referred to as freak dancing or freaking.[2]

Krumping  - is an urban street dance-form that began in South Central Los Angeles and is characterized by free, expressive, and highly energetic moves involving the arms, head, legs, chest and feet. It has become a major part of hip hop dance culture. Krumping is used frequently in hip-hop street dance battles.

Hip Hop - A name for the 4 elements of the late 70’s New York City renaissance which includes break dancing, emceeing, (rapping) graffiti, and turntables.

Street dance - also called vernacular dance[1] is an umbrella term, used to describe dance styles that evolved outside of dance studios in everyday spaces such as streets, school yards and nightclubs. They are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with the spectators and the other dancers.

BUSTAMOVE – To break out and dance.

Groove – Carefully aligned concurrent rhythmic patterns” that sets in motion dancing or foot-tapping on the part of listeners

TWO STEP A two-step consists of two steps in approximately the same direction onto the same foot, separated by a closing step with the other foot

FREACK DANCE - Freak dancing (or grinding) is when two or more dancers rub together to music in a suggestive sexual manner. You can think of it like dry humping,

Chest pop – To left your chest and drop it back to the rhythm of the music.

Body Roll – A dance move in which the entire body goes through a wave like motion focusing on the hips.

Waving – a move in funk style dance. The arms, legs,  upper and lower body move to imulate a wave.

Gettin Off – dancing to the best of your ability.

Quick Study – Being able to pick up Dance choreography fast.
